Don't Just Survive Mercury Retrograde - THRIVE
Why The Hype About Mercury Retrograde?
Of all the planetary aspects, Mercury in retrograde seems to get the most hype. But what is all this Mercury retrograde stuff? Why do some folks dread it? What does this mean for you? And more importantly, what can you do to not only survive, but thrive in a Mercury retrograde period?
During our time together through this guide, I will (re)introduce you to this aspect of known as Mercury Retrograde. You’ll discover how it impacts your day-to-day life. You’ll learn recommended do’s and postpones-if-possible for navigating this three and a half week phase. And make sure you check out the preparedness kit with strategies for readying yourself to not just survive, but THRIVE during a Mercury in retrograde period.
With just some quick and simple preparations and tips, you can increase your effectiveness while warding off at least some of the frustration and chaos this phase can bring. And there are some opportunities within Mercury retrograde that you don’t want to miss out on.
So let’s get started. Onward!
What Is Mercury Retrograde?
What is Mercury retrograde? Well, here’s the short (non-NASA) version: Mercury retrograde is when the planet Mercury gives the illusion of moving backwards in the sky. And during this period, the Universe becomes energetically clumsy.
Okay, let me back up here… pardon the pun! Mercury doesn’t actually travel backwards in the sky. With Mercury located closest to the sun, it’s orbit is shorter than that of the earth. So three to four times a year, as Mercury buzzes by the earth, we experience a Mercury retrograde period.
I like to use the example of two cyclist. If you were riding and another cyclist (that we’ll nickname “Mercury”) sprinted past you, then you could say that the other cyclist was traveling faster than you. But let’s say that the other cyclist slowed down and you passed him. In that instance, it could appear as if the other cyclist was traveling in reverse. Later, when the other cyclist (our buddy Mercury) decides to sprint by you again, he generates a bit of dust and dirt, creating a turbulent draft as he whizzes on by again.
Keep in mind that Mercury goes retrograde three to four times in a calendar year. Unlike your birthday or an anniversary that occurs on the same date each year, it retrogrades during different calendar days and in different astrological signs depending on the year.

How Does Mercury Retrograde Impact Me?
Mercury, as with the moon and the other planets in our solar system, impacts our energy here on earth.
Mercury governs all that is communication from conversations themselves to the means for communicating. This includes technology like cell phones, computers, and fax machines, as well as written communication from letters, manuscripts, term papers, deeds, contracts, leases, wills, and power of attorney documents. So it is no surprise that when Mercury retrogrades, there are more miscommunications and misunderstandings.
It also impacts timing. So it is not unusual to experience shipping or travel delays.
As I mentioned earlier, Mercury goes retrograde in three to four different zodiac signs per calendar year. If it happens to fall during your sign, the planet’s energy intensifies meaning more delays and more frustrations. I recommend extra care - double (and triple) checking contracts, plans, and emails to head off or at least minimize any miscommunications or mistaken assumptions that could occur. This is not a time to rush. Slow and steady comes out ahead in the long run.
I know what you’re thinking… but don’t fret! Mercury retrograde is not all about chaos and frustration. In the next section, you’ll discover the opportunities available to you during Mercury retrograde.
But before moving forward, I want to address a frequently asked question regarding those born during a Mercury retrograde period. Although I do not believe they are exempt from the energetic influence of Mercury retrograde, I do believe they are more innately adaptable to the ebbs and flows of this phase. To find out whether you were born during a Mercury retrograde period, you can look up the Mercury retrograde dates for your birth year.
What To Do Versus Postpone During Mercury Retrograde
As I touched on earlier, there are opportunities to be found during a Mercury retrograde period, as well as tasks or activities that are best to postpone. This section begins with a focus on the favorable activities to help temper some of the fear people have with regards to Mercury retrograde. Next, you will also learn what is optimal to postpone.
As you know, we make plans and the Universe laughs. Sometimes that job offer or Mr. or Ms. Right comes along smack dab in the midst of the energetic temporality of Mercury retrograde. This is why I include tips on what you can do for that which you cannot postpone.
So without further ado, let’s dive into the do’s.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel rushed with the pressures of daily to-do lists that realistically take more than one person to complete. Not only can this rush rob us of the miracles and gifts of the moment, but it increases the occurrences of miss steps: errors, accidents, words we can’t take back. Sound familiar? Most stories of miss steps where I was responsible begin with the phrase “I was in a hurry”.
As I mentioned earlier, when Mercury retrogrades, the planet “appears” to slow down and move backwards. It reminds us to slow down to stop, look, and listen: to retreat from the rush, review our circumstances, reassess the details, and redirect our efforts.
Now the Universe will slow things down with little (or not so little) reminders that can seem like annoyances at the time, feeling like we are treading through or stuck in mud. It (shall we say) encourages us to look back to reevaluate our approaches and strategies of how things got the way they are from those I-was-in-a-hurry moments. But more importantly, it refocuses our attention to consider new possibilities. And in a pleasant irony, we can find ourselves accomplishing more in less time.
Looking back can actually be a forward motion. And when it comes to Mercury retrograde, the key to the “do’s” is found in the “re”: reevaluate, recollect, rewind, reconnect, revisit, repair, reassess, redesign, repeat. Even the word “retreat” reminds us to slow down and breathe into our decisions. You’ll see what I mean with some of the examples below.
After pushing yourself to launch your new blog, you find it’s not generating the activity you envisioned. To make matters more challenging, you run into a technical snag with some of your links on your site. By slowing down and reviewing your circumstances (in this example your blog) with greater clarity, you not only resolve the technical snafus but you discover strategies for generating more traffic and a little extra income.
While in the process of renewing your apartment lease, there is a technical snafu and the leasing agent is unable to print out the leasing contract. That night you reconsider your decision to renew and come across another apartment that is a nicer unit, closer to your work, and less money per month. After triple-checking the contract (which I’ll get into later), you submit your application and are now happily planning your move to your new home (optimally after Mercury retrograde).
You refrain from jumping quickly at the job offer you received to reevaluate the circumstances. Soon after, you are presented with a better opportunity with another company.
You’ve been reminiscing about the fun you had at the family reunion a few years ago. Although you may not have been in contact since, you reach out to your cousins by email and happily reconnect over shared memories like it was just last week.
Your big presentation was postponed. With this additional time, you revisit, review, and revise your presentation resulting in a more favorable outcome at the rescheduled meeting.
Retrace Your Tracks
You thought that heirloom ring was lost forever. Ironically, during a phase where you are more prone to misplacing your keys and reading glasses, your are reunited with this seemingly long lost item. I attribute this to the next “re” - reorganize.
Yep, that’s how you found that heirloom. By cleaning out your closets, junk drawers, and files, you rid the clutter and create better access to and space for the things that matter. And donating gently used items creates good energy and positive momentum going into the post Mercury retrograde period.
In the spirit of Mercury retrograde, you take those comfy yet stylish shoes you found while reorganizing for repair and now they are good as new (and you don’t have to break them in)!
A former client who hasn’t done business with you for years welcomes your courtesy call and (lo and behold) needs and employs your services again.
Although not a “re” word, the above examples refer to going back to something. In this case, I am going back to the unpredictability of technology that mentioned earlier. I highly recommend backing up computers at a minimum daily (if not more). Have to mail or fax important documents? Make sure you have proof (backup) that you sent it. And follow-up calls are definitely worth your time to ensure your documents were successfully received.
To Postpone (& tips if you can’t)
Now it may seem like the don’ts (or the things to postpone) would just be the direct opposite of the above list of “re’s”. And in some instances that is true.
Life happens. And our happenstances don’t always occur with our buddy Mercury’s orbit schedule. So below are not only things to ideally postpone until after Mercury retrograde, but useful strategies for those you cannot postpone.
It is best to postpone any major moves and important decisions when Mercury is retrograde. Not only is it difficult for people to make decisions, but decision made are not as as firmly grounded as usual.
If cannot postpone… Note and document any plans. Review and confirm before taking actions involving others. Allow for more flexibility with especially timing. And don’t forget to have a backup plan.
Launching Anything Involving Communication
Considering launching that marketing campaign, web site, movie, or book? People are more focused on their own frustrations, thus, not as receptive to your message during this time. This is also the season of miscommunications and misunderstandings.
If cannot postpone… Plan follow-up efforts or a tiered campaign extending beyond Mercury retrograde period. I also want to mention that an exception to this could be a re-release of a movie or second edition of a book. However, optimally, I recommend waiting.
Contracts & Agreements
Just as people are a bit more flaky in their decisions and agreement, so to are the documents and contract representing them and their intentions. Sometime it’s a matter of typos. Other times it’s different interpretations of the agreement.
If cannot postpone… Definitely employ professional counsel or at least another set of trustworthy and reliable eyes to review documents. But don’t stop there! It’s important for you to walk through contracts by line item and by the letter weeding out any typos that could change the integrity of the agreement.
Changing Relationship Status
With communication being a focal point of the faux pas during Mercury retrograde, misunderstandings through miscommunications and poor choices of words can have couples arguing over something they are actually in agreement on. Other times, a partner can make an of-the-moment decision to break up, only to later trying to return with regret. And if considering furthering your commitments, again, it is energetically more favorable to avoid this period as details with the ceremony or the relationship itself can go awry.
If cannot postpone… Make sure a change of relationship has been under consideration for a while (prior to Mercury retrograde). If revelations within the relationship surface during Mercury retrograde, use the remainder of this phase to review your options (and if applicable plan your exit strategy). Note: Obviously, if you’re in danger, you don’t wait.
Whether you are the buyer or the seller, expect delays, changes, revisions, and even reversals in decisions leading to frustrations and disappointments.
If cannot postpone… If you are the buyer, it is definitely worth doing your homework in terms of researching reviews or hiring a professional to perform an inspection. And as a seller, make sure you are compensated for decision changes by the buyer. Both parties need to take extra care with reviewing contracts, as well as creating a paper trail accounting the steps in the transaction.
Boy, I can attest to this one. I took my computer to a tech specialist to load some additional memory (when Mercury was retrograding) only to discover the refurbished component was defective. I also ran into difficulties with a new bluetooth that I bought during Mercury retrograde that I had to return for a different model.
If cannot postpone… Unless it’s broken, hang in there until after this retrograde passes. And if the item is broken, do a little more research (than usual) before heading to the store or ordering online. Pay special attention to return policies, as well as save your receipt and the product’s original packaging to ensure you are not stuck with a defective product.
This one involves a bit more detail. Within Mercury retrograde, travel to your destination tends to hit more snags than the return trip home. Business travel to revisit existing or former clients (as I talked about with reconnecting) is favorable. However, travel to a potential client or a new territory is best after this phase.
Although this time is more favorable for personal travel such as family reunions or returning to that favorite vacation spot, pack extra snacks and upload some fun reading material to your e-reader to aid your patience during delays. And make sure to bring your GPS and printed maps and directions for sightseeing in case that GPS feels the effects of Mercury retrograde.
If cannot postpone… Print out your plane ticket, travel directions, and confirmations for accommodations along with the phone numbers to call if (let’s just say) things don’t go as planned. As with technology, carry that printed backup with you. I even recommend taking the backup a step further by making 2 copies of your credit cards, passport, driver’s license, and other important id items. Carry one copy with you in a safe yet different place than your wallet. The other copy is in a safe yet accessible place for a trusted family member or friend to access and provide for you, again, in the event these items are lost or stolen during your travels. Again, have an idea of a plan B if things do not go as planned.
Clumsiness & Forgetfulness
Okay, this is not a “don’t” as much as a public service announcement to slow down and exercise more patience with others, as well as with yourself. Personally, I find consistently placing my wallet and keys in the same glass bowl on the kitchen counter reduces the frustration of wasted time from unwanted scavenger hunts.
Again, because people are less focused, exercise additional care when driving or working out at the gym as preventable accidents are more prevalent during a Mercury retrograde period. Clumsiness can also include the words we deliver and receive. Making more of a conscious effort with listening and speaking reduces the likelihood or at least the severity of miscommunications.
In the next section, I am going to provide you with a Mercury Retrograde Preparedness Kit for now only surviving but thriving during these pesky periods.
Your Mercury Retrograde Preparedness Kit
As I mentioned earlier, Mercury goes retrograde three to four times a year with each period lasting about three and a half weeks. The signs and times of the year vary from year to year.
I believe we need not hibernate nor live in fear during these phases. I believe we can “preset” and prepare the energy surrounding specific circumstances in our lives for more optimal results.
Over the years, I’ve used and modified the following preparedness kit. Although no system and strategies immune us from the effects of Mercury retrograde, it does help ready us for the opportunities, as well as dealing with the challenges within this energy.
1 - 2 Weeks Ahead
Even before the official start date of Mercury retrograde, you may begin to notice your cell phone or internet connection not quite running as smoothly as usual. This is why I send out alerts two week ahead, as well as a 1 week reminder, for starting your preparations for Mercury retrograde.
Make Your “List”
Lists projects or specific tasks you would like to complete during this period. For larger projects, maybe you are listing specific steps in the process rather than the complete project itself. As you create this list, refer to the earlier “re’s” and “postpones” for considering what to include on your list.
Reduce Your List by 20%
Why reduce your list? Remember the mud on your path slowing you down with annoyances and delays? I want you to be patient with yourself. Rushing and forcing artificial deadlines will only lead to more miss steps, misunderstandings, and miscommunications… particularly during a Mercury retrograde phase. Plus, less (distractions) is more in terms of your focus and what you can accomplish during this period.
Ready Yourself for the Unexpected
Yep, it’s the b-word again - backup. Take inventory of helpful documents like bills (with account numbers) and phone numbers in the event you need to make that call. Locate product warrantees and instructions particularly for technology equipment. And make a copy of your driver’s license in case you misplace your wallet.
Back It Up!
Start backing up your computer at least every 2 days. And backup your resources by printing out important documents (as I mentioned earlier).
As much as you prepare for anything let alone Mercury retrograde, you cannot expect to completely immune yourself from the chaos… but you can certainly temper it.
If you live in the Midwest in January, you expect some snow or at least some cold temperatures. You expect it will take a bit longer to get anywhere. You have to allow a little extra time for putting on your coat and boots, scraping the ice off your windshield, and shoveling the snow so you can put your car in drive and go. By viewing Mercury Retrograde as a season, you can accept happenstances at face value and are less prone to taking things personally… And no, the Universe is not picking on just you!
Although seasonal, Mercury retrograde is a time for expecting the unexpected. You may have no reason to suspect your internet service is going to cut out. However, you have your cable bill handy with your account number and the contact number for tech support to address a loss of service. And if service is out for a while, you may need to go elsewhere to tap into alternative wifi. Going back to our Midwest winter example, road closures, flight delays, or cancellations may have you calling an audible with an alternative travel plans.
Between miscommunications and the happenstance of delays or cancellations during Mercury retrograde, it’s of greater importance to (re)confirm details for flights, meetings, and even coffee dates to prevent unnecessary confusion, frustration, and wasted time.
As mentioned earlier, I highly recommend printing out travel confirmations for flights and accommodations as technology notoriously goes awry. And speaking of technology, I highly recommend backing up your computer on a daily basis.
Okay, at the risk of sounding a little dramatic, this is more of a focus on where you are and where you are heading based on your past decisions. Instead of continuing to spin your wheels, you may discover how to better redirect your efforts and talents.
Although not the greatest time for starting something new, this is an optimal time for writing out your plans in pencil so you can edit as you modify them for moving forward post retrograde. Think of it as part of the process.
As with the subtle onset of Mercury retrograde, there is a residual affect lingering for about a week after its three-plus week phase. From personal experience, I’ve found this post phase less intense than the pre-retrograde period. Nevertheless, I recommend holding off on any big decisions, commitments, or major purchases for 1 to 2 weeks following the end of retrograde.
The revisions and redirections revealed during Mercury retrograde begin to make more sense in the realities of life. However, it’s important to ease into activating those plans as you slowly resume your acceleration forward.
Moving forward, don’t forget to carry the lessons of patience and preparation into the post-retrograde period. However, as the months pass and we get caught up in the rush of our lives, Mercury will come around again to remind us to slow down, reassess, and be in the moment.
